"Grasslands Badlands" is a two-panel drawing, or diptych. It expresses my deep admiration for all of the elements that make up the landscape of the Little Missouri River region. The graceful slopes covered with richly colored grass, the eroded gumbo hills studded with junipers, and the distant massive butte on the horizon.
Bowman artist Cris Fulton loves the grasslands and badlands country of southwestern North Dakota, northwestern South Dakota, and southeastern Montana. She considers the magnificent prairie landscape of the Little Missouri, Powder, and Yellowstone rivers to be her own artistic backyard. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Dakota, and has been an artist and photographer throughout her life. "To me, this territory is nothing less than a prairie paradise, a garden of Eden, and a heaven on earth. People who have grown up in this remarkable region affectionately call it "God's Country." This is a very rugged, yet vulnerable landscape; one that I fervently hope will be preserved for its majestic beauty and its capacity...

The original size of each panel is 20 x 30 inches, and they are now in a private collection in Billings, Montana. This is an early work in pastel pencil, and it is still very appealing to me, for the colors and the wide view provided by the combination of panels.
